For the past two weekends my husband, the kids and I began building our raised garden bed for our square-foot vegetable garden. We live in a cul-de-sac on a little less than 1/2 an acre, so we have to find ways to use the little space we have. Since we let our chickens free range during the late evening, we enclosed the raised garden bed with garden netting. Here are the materials we used:
Twelve 2" X 8" X 8' UNTREATED lumber- Don’t get treated lumber because treatments can seep into the soil and contaminate your planting area.
Twenty bags of organic garden soil
Fourty-eight wood landscape stakes
3" long wood screws or deck screws
The original cost of the materials was much more than I had anticipated, but we're hoping these raised beds will last a few years. We cut the lumber in half and made six 4 feet X 4 feet square raised garden beds. The older kids really had a lot of fun helping out and the little ones enjoyed playing around the boxes. Our next project will be to build a potato tower.
