5 of our hens were attacked by some horrible animal in the middle of the night and left all over the back yard. One of them even had an egg laying right next to it. Sadly, we had just lost 2 hens a few weeks ago by accident while adding on to our coop. We have lost more hens this year than in the last 3 years since we got them. We are now down to 10 hens from the 17 we had after we gave a few away.
Two days after the attack, I found this hen walking around the back yard. The poor thing must have been hiding somewhere waiting for it to be safe before coming back. As soon as I saw her I picked her up and held her for a while, but as soon as I tried putting her back into the coop she fought back and I had to put her down. I was able to pick her up again later in the evening and by that time, she had calmed down and let me put her in the coop for the night. They are all so traumatized.
Luckily, one of our dear friends gave us 6 fertilized eggs on August 1st, so we are looking forward to the baby chicks hatching on the 21st. We really don't know what we are doing, so we will be reading all about how to hatch eggs and raise new baby chicks.
